Connells Bay Sculpture park
24 May 2005
I was lucky enough to be able to visit Connells Bay Sculpture Park this weekend, for my Mom’s birthday. Connells Bay is on the East Coast of Waiheke Island, and the Sculpture Park is a collection of sculptures by New Zealand artists, installed throughout the property.
The artists - renowned contemporary NZ sculptors - include Chris Booth, Neil Dawson, Paul Dibble, Fatu Feu’u, Christine Hellyar, Virginia King, Phil Price, Richard Thompson and Jeff Thomson.
Three cows looking out to sea, by Jeff Thompson, is one of my favourites. The cows are made from corrugated iron, and are surprisingly lifelike. They sit on the side of a grassy hill, looking out over the bay to sea. I was also very taken by Fatu Feu’u’s Guardian of the Planting, a huge Macrocarpa tree stump carved into two beautiful heads, similar in style to the statues on Easter Island.
